Standard Work
Do you have standards? Do you adhere to those standards? Most organizations will answer yes to the first question, and no to the second. And that second answer has more to do with the failure of the Lean initiative than anything else.
Standard Work is central to achieving and sustaining the Lean enterprise because it demands adherence to best practices. Standards allow us to detect deviations. Problems and abnormal conditions become immediately obvious. They are then studied until a satisfactory solution is discovered. Then that solution becomes "today’s best practice" and is adhered to until a future problem or abnormal condition starts the process all over again. Adherence to standards is an absolute prerequisite to continuous improvement.
Productivity has helped organizations to establish standard operations in both their manufacturing and administrative functions.
