Event Overview
With the ever-increasing popularity of championship racing, we are becoming more and more familiar with the pit Crew and the role they play in the success of each race. As most race fans can tell you, often what happens in the pit will be the difference between winning and losing a race.

The pit crew is a highly specialized team of individuals that share a common goal of keeping their car ahead of the competition. Their success can be traced to a few simple principles – teamwork, communication and their strict adherence to workplace standards.

Like championship racing teams, manufacturing companies want to stay ahead of their competition, but we don’t always do a good job communicating, and setting and following standards.

In this four-day training event, focused on Workplace Standardization you will have the opportunity to tap the knowledge, practical experience and skills of experts in Lean and the PIT experience. You will gain the know-how to help you overcome implementation obstacles, establish and adhere to workplace standards, launch a changeover initiative and achieve buy-in from employees and managers.

These experts are ready to share their real-life experiences tackling the important issues facing you now. Join them and fellow practitioners in Charlotte, July 15-18, 2008. This is your opportunity to learn the vital tools needed to build on your implementation efforts and to sustain the gains you’ve achieved thus far.

Building a Culture of Continuous Improvement Using 5S

July 15, 2008
8:00am - 5:00pm

It is no secret that the implementation of Lean is 20% technical and 80% social. Today, many companies have a firm understanding of the technical side, but fall short of their improvement goals because they can't make the necessary changes on the social side. As a result, gains are short term and aren't sustained, and the program loses momentum and eventually support. While most of today's managers understand the principles of 5S and can make the connection between implementation and a cleaner, better organized work place, few understand the tremendous potential the 5S implementation process has to truly empower the people, resulting in a culture of continuous improvement that will ensure sustainable results.

Although conceptually simple, implementation of the 5S's often becomes a real challenge as you work to:

  • start a dynamic team environment with the involvement of all employees

  • introduce areas of autonomous team decision making and continually expand them as you develop team member skills and knowledge

  • build a vision of workplace transformation, team development and visual standardization that is shared by management and operators

In the session, taught using lecture, group discussion and simulation, learn how to use the 5S methodology to not only clean and organize your workplace, but to empower your people and instill a culture of continuous improvement in your organization.

Learning Objectives:
In this workshop, participants will

  • discover the enormous improvement potential of a successful 5S program

  • develop team responsibility and accountability

  • implement a system of continuous improvement

  • improve shop floor team performance

  • understand the 5S implementation phases and associated techniques

  • discover critical elements and key success factors of a 5S program

  • learn the necessary evolution of management's role - a must for success with this program

Establishing Workplace Standards

July 16, 2008
8:00am-5:00pm

Standard Work is central to achieving and sustaining the Lean Enterprise. By definition Standard Work demands adherence to today’s best practices and must be imbedded in all you do, from standard operations in the workplace to standardized policies and procedures. In manufacturing operations, standard work is a key element in the elimination of waste and excess inventory and in achieving balanced and synchronized production. What it boils down to is that absent of standard work there can be no Lean.

Guided by a classroom simulation, participants will use a proven methodology to develop a standard procedure, and then apply document control and visual workplace principles and techniques to train others in their new best practice, or standard work.

Learning Objectives:
In this workshop, participants will learn how to:

  • analyze use of standards

  • create and document standards

  • communicate and ensure adherence to standards

  • maintain and continually update standards as best practices evolve

Thinking Inside the Box: The PIT Training Experience

July 17, 2008
8:00am - 5:00pm

This event is an innovative and hands-on learning experience designed as in insightful "jumping off" point for organizations to begin thinking about internal performance and how to address specific challenges within their organizations. The program provides an inside view of how elite pit crews plan, prepare, and perform an amazing number of tasks with precision and speed under extreme circumstances and creates parallels between the performance of today's pit crews and that of precision maintenance, manufacturing management operations. Using the same equipment and cars used for practice at PIT, attendees will participate in five stationary pit stops under the coaching and watchful eye of PIT's instructors!

This full day event will be held at the PIT Training Center located in Mooresville "Race City USA", North Carolina, approximately 30 miles north of Charlotte. Your day will include classroom discussion and group exercise on the NASCAR pit crew concenpts, an off-site tour of an actual race shop and a three-hour outdoor, hands-on activity with PIT coaches and instructors as team leaders. You ill learn how to build a culture of team work and continuous improvement and the elements that will raise your equipment reliability program to a world class level. Lunch is included. Transportation will be provided by Productivity Inc.

This session will cover:

  • Standard work
  • Performance Metrics
  • Continuous Improvement
  • Critical Paths
  • Team Development
  • Reliability Specialization
  • Preventive Maintenance
  • Preparing for Performance
  • Conflict Resolution

Achieving Quick Changeover

July 18 , 2008
8:00am - 5:00pm

Learn the principles and techniques needed to decrease changeover times and increase inventory turns. This workshop will teach you the changeover methodology that will allow you to gain manufacturing flexibility while increasing your ability to react to customer demands and competitive pressures. Through a combination of lecture, group exercises and simulation this workshop will demonstrate how to use standard work to reduce changeover time and make more changeovers to satisfy one-piece flow.

In this workshop participants will learn to

  • understand the key concepts of changeover
  • identify the differences between internal and external elements of work
  • improve internal and external activities
  • discover the no-cost, low-cost approach to changeover implementation
  • sustain implementation of changeover allowing you to produce smaller lot sizes, lower inventories, shorten lead times, and gain additional capacity
