A Lean Enterprise in motion™ has two primary dimensions.
The most commonly understood of these is the lean production system, incorporating elements of total quality management, six sigma, total productive maintenance, just-in-time — aka, the line-up of proven lean manufacturing tools and waste elimination techniques.
Its purpose is to ensure the best possible mix of cost, quality, and delivery to provide better customer experiences at target margin. A lean production system (technical) guides the “what”.
The second dimension of a Lean Enterprise in motion™ is the lean management system. The lean management system has two parts. First, it has a lean infrastructure composed of a network of team structures, communication programs, visual management, information flows – aka a high-performance workplace. Second, a lean management system has a focus on leadership and culture, voice of the customer, and Hoshin Kanri, that aligns the total organization to achieve its business and improvement goals – aka strategy formation and strategy deployment. A lean management system (social) governs the “how”.
