Why A3 Thinking?
A3 problem solving is a robust process and learned discipline for using PDCA (scientific thinking) and root-cause analysis to build and cultivate a problem-solving mindset. It enables organizations and employees at all levels to work collaboratively, ask the right questions, and learn from each other to continuously solve problems which prevent processes from consistently delivering Just in Time and Right the First time. In its simplest form, A3 thinking is all about become good at:

  • Sizing up the current situation (fact-based data and Gemba observation)
  • Reading the opportunities (aiming at relevance)
  • Deciding what to do (understanding the benefits and implementation impacts)
  • Acting (a bias for action) and ensuring targets are defined and met

… And, along the way building the behaviors necessary to repeat and sustain the A3 process.

The Key to A3 Thinking – Learning from Each Other
The Key to A3 Thinking is understanding the significance of how things work together. A3 is applicable at each level of the organization, in all environments: manufacturing, administrative and services. And, given the systemic nature of the A3 process, it is important that every member of the organization, starting with leaders and managers, understand and become active in its learning and application.

A3 is a process built-on providing structured opportunities for people to come together, share a productive dialog, and learn from each other. So, we’re not only solving problems via A3s, we are also learning how to align A3 Thinking with continuous improvement and making A3 Thinking part of daily work.
